Chain ring guards: good or bad??

Hi Folks

I see that on the HPV safety rules they require a chain guard over the main cog.

"the chainring must be covered by either a fixed shield or by a strong rotating chainguard (including those with a single chainring)"

Any thoughts as to where to get such a gadget and would it be a good idea for a road going machine??

Hi CS,
I don't see any reason

Hi CS,

I don't see any reason why they'd be bad (and I can understand not wanting to stab people with the large chain ring). I had one on my Sofrider until I, err, well, fell over into the dirt and it cracked (mine was plastic).

Thanks for reminding me... to add to my list

While considering a Cruzbike conversion I realized early on that front end crashes, even minor ones, could cause serious damage to people, animals, things or the chainring.

Check out "bashguards" ...

... and many others; however, they all seem to require removing the outer chainring, not simply bolting (with longer bolts) over top of the outer ring - apparently there's not enough clearance. Seems like a big penalty to lose 1/3 to 1/2 of your gears. Must be I'm missing other products.

strange product

The "chain thong" seems mainly intended to prevent "chainring tattoos" - surely we've all had a few of those.

It probably won't prevent cutting someone's leg if you hit them in motion with the chain on a middle or lower ring:

and they even have a retailer in Bristol, UK though that's nowhere near Fife...

MOUNTAIN BIKE BASH GUARD

Hi Folks

Thanks for the comment, I searched on Ebay and found this "MOUNTAIN BIKE BASH GUARD"

alt="bashguard"
bashguard.JPG height: 225px;

I'll fit it onto my conversion to see how it works.

Then when I get my Silivo I can swap it over.
