Quest on Trainer

I'm looking to try "riding" my quest on a trainer this winter. I don't know much (ile. anything) about trainers, but was told by the bike store that the Cyclops trainers they sell require a skewer, which the Quest, with the IGH, clearly doesn't have.

So, does anyone know what kind/brand of trainer it will work with? Thanks in advance,

Rich

You can ride the Quest on

You can ride the Quest on rollers but it takes a lot of patience to get proficient.

One thing to check ...

One thing to check is the pushrod that controls the SRAM hub. It sticks out the right side, and is moved in and out through the mechanism in the external click box. This is a rather weak aluminum rod, easily bent, and it will interfere with the mounts on many (most? all?) trainers. You can take it out (unscrew it), but then you will be fixed into whatever gear it was in when you did that.

And note, when you put it back, it is tightened only just beyond finger tight (see precise instructions in the SRAM booklet).

Or try rollers as Eric suggests.

Hi, I have a quest v2 451 bike and wish to put it onto a trainer inside.
Not being very bike savvy and after reading every thread I could relating to trainers on the cruzebike forums, I would like to purchase this bike trainer and take it to the lbs to be fitted. https://kurtkinetic.com/products/kinetic-magnetic/
https://kurtkinetic.com/technical-information/bike-compatibility/

Kinetic Magnetic Features
  • Stable, durable trainer frame
  • Ergonomic rubberized knobs and feet
  • Unconditional lifetime warranty
  • Frame fits 22 inch to 29 inch wheels
  • Fully assembled
  • 9-position thumb shifter
  • Magnetic resistance
  • Large diameter roller
  • Folds flat for easy storage
Do you think I would need to also purchase any of the following trainer parts in addition to the trainer to assist the lbs in fitting the unit?
http://www.velovita.net.au/onlineshop?category=106&manufacturer=20 and page 2 of trainer parts http://www.velovita.net.au/onlineshop?category=106&manufacturer=20&pagenumber=2
Help would be appreciated, thank you.

Are you sure your 20" wheels will work ???
later...bye
Thank you for your help... Great point!
I thought I read somewhere on the forum that 451 was a 22in, so I thought I was safe. I don't really know how to measure exactly, so I googled!! and mine with schwalbe durano tyres measures just over 20.5 in, so I guess I would need to add the small wheel conversion kit to the kinetic trainer or could I put on really thick tyres and make it to 22in or isn't this possible!!??? https://kurtkinetic.com/products/kinetic-small-wheel-adapter/
Thank you again for your help.

Hi Jen,

The IGH isn't compatible with the Kinetic even with the small wheel adapter because the click box interface is in the way of the mount points. That's going to be true of anything other than rollers.

You have some options To make it work

With the Kinetic
1) You will need the small wheel adapter.
2) You would need to remove the click box
3) extract the shifting pin
4) That would leave you the lowest 9 gear that will shift

You can mount the Quest 20" on a Wahoo Kickr because that has you remove the front wheel completely. Again you'll have just nine gears.

I have done both of those setups; and found the shifting rang insufficient for any quality training, hence the long thread on these forums "project quickr" when I converted a Quest 20 inch to use a traditional rear derailuer similar to the QX100 so that It could be used on the trainers more easily. It's a long meandering thread that gets off topic a few time but it does detail how to pull off the conversion if you are so inclined. http://cruzbike.com/forum/threads/project-quickr.8016/

Thank you so much for all your information. I will have a good read and discuss the options above with my local bike shop. I am not more than a recreational rider wanting to keep movement in my joints, so 9 gears may be enough as the advertised range with the kinetic is good. Again, thank you for your time in replying.
