Rare Sighting

The set up:

The weather is beautiful here.
Calm.
Clear.
85F. this morning and, it being Sunday, just Church traffic, out-and-about.
Oh, and with the T.D.F. (Tour de France) live coverage, the Club riders were at home.

Irresistable!

So, I went out for a quick ride: quick enough to return in time to
catch the end of stage two live coverage of the T.D.F.

The first half of my ride was at a very quick pace for me, at an 18mph average,
while the return half was much slower.
Slower through rolling hills.
Still, my 16.1mph average was alright... a little slower than my usual 17mph.

The Sighting:

At two miles out from home and the end of my ride, I caught a glimpse of
a bright yellow jersey... with the fellows' feet spinning in the front.
Oh boy!
I was tired, having just sprinted a fast mile (24mph) on the last flattish road on the way home,
but spun up my cadence to catch the first recumbent I've ever seen ahead of me, going my way!

The catch did not take long.
I was spinning fast and he was just loafing along while mashing his pedals in a high gear.
He saw my approach.
Surely he saw me: I could see his eyes in his dual bar-mounted rearview mirrors.

We loafed along at 10-12mph for a few yards while we traded greetings
and then, since I was on my final push home, I passed him going uphill.

Yup.
Tired and a wee bit winded, I actually passed a Bachetta high racer.
(I think it was a Corsa, with two 700c wheels.)

The last section of road to my driveway is a little hilly, but I know that
the concrete pad in the garage is smooth, clean and cold, so I always
sprint hard at the end.

20mph.

Rare sighting, a rare pass and a good workout!
